Unlike Steve I was lucky enough to see Cults perform recently, and the stage fought valiantly to contain them, but to no avail. This isn’t to say anyone crowd dived, but instead the bands energy exploded into the crowd from the pit to the upper deck.
I could go on about that, but this piece is about the album. Released early last summer, the band quickly saw a lot of success, especially in the song Go Outside. As of late the album found its way onto a lot of “best album of the year list” and I think that’s pretty well deserved. Madeline Follin knows exactly where to carry her voice, make it equal parts sweet, ambient, sexy and certainly mysterious. Brian Oblivion is certainly a appropriate partner for Follin with his fuzzy lo-fi guitar and occasional backing vocals.
I decide to post the song Bumper for two reasons. One this is the second-to-last song on the album, but it could easily be up at the front, which shows how this album is just as powerful from start to finish. And two it’s just a fun song. That’s what this kind of music is about, dancing in the pit or in your room. In the fun department this band certainly delivers.
