Unknown Mortal Orchestra was a band that seemingly came out of nowhere last year. Offering up psych rock/pop has been a sort of common trend over the past few years, but Unknown Mortal Orchestra deliver it in a way that no one else has done. For one instead of steady drums they sample beats from hip-hop songs, which is immediately strange but at the same time pretty awesome. The entire band seems to have chops and it shows throughout their first album. A particular favorite of mine continues to be How Can U Luv Me?, a track that harkens back to classic 60’s/70’s pop. It’s a good tune for sure, the bass, vocals, and guitar are all run through heavy effects without really killing the purity of music. Also there is a familiarity to the singers voice, though to whom is uncertain. There are times while listening to them I think wow he sounds like John Lennon, and there are other times when I think wow he sounds like Jon Anderson of Yes. Overall the band has got the goods, very talented and I am looking foreword to hearing more from them in the future.
