Mark’s Pick of the Week: Nighttiming by Coconut Records

Solo projects have always held a lot of weight in my opinion. When you’re in a band you have people to bounce ideas off of, learn from, and share all the successes and losses. However, When you're flying solo, it’s just you putting you work out their for the world to judge. Not to say people in solo projects go in completely alone, but they can’t lean on people the way you can in a band. But after listening to this album I don’t think Jason Schwartzman is worried about that.

The actor/musician has a lot going on this album. He performs most of the instrumental parts as well as sings. He also recruits a few of his friends including Kirsten Dunst and Zooey Deschanel to sing on a few of these tracks, which giving it a fantastic party feel almost like you’re listening to some people playing music on their porch.

The songs themselves, groove, swing, sway, and jam in all the right ways. They move flawlessly between quiet ukulele songs to fun clubby dance numbers heavy in bass and keyboard.

I would definitely recommend this disc for someone looking for a fun indie pop album. Look for the coconut records gang in their next movie/tv show/music project/whatever.
