I recently tricked my friend Elliot into liking Panda Bear, and it wasn’t hard. Noah Lennox is one of the best on the indie music scene today, with his role in Animal Collective, his fantastic solo career and a healthy spoonful of other artists featuring him in their songs (Walkabout by Atlas Sound a particular standout) Lennox is building a pretty solid career for himself. And what is it about his music? There is a certain warmness that emanates through the entirety of his album Person Pitch, the sort of warmth you get from being wrapped snuggly in a blanket next to a fire while drinking hot chocolate. While some of his songs can be challenging to listen to, for instance Good Girls/Carrots is about twelve minutes long I think, they never disappoint, they never break away from that warm aesthetic, and they certainly never fail to illicit emotions from the listener. The second track from Person Pitch, Take Pills, is a personal favorite, the lengthy intro sets the tone well for the coming song, and the poppy explosion about 2 or three minutes in always just makes me happy.
You didn't trick me, I don't like Panda Bear. I love me some Noah Lennox and Animal collective but I hate the sound of this particular project of his (Panda Bear). It is very similar to how I love the Marshmallow Ghosts while only kinda like the group that they are a side project of (Black Moth Super Rainbow). Same people, different music.
