Metric is probably going to be a one hit wonder. They have four albums
out, and one kinda big song released almost 3 years ago. They tried to
capitalize by allowing one of their songs to be used for Scott Pilgrim vs the World, but based on ticket sales, that really
wasn’t as big of a move as it seems. They're also from Canada. That said, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t
listen to them. Or look at Emily Haines (she’s to me what St. Vincent is to Elliott).
The band really focuses on the low end of the frequency range, with a
lot of driving drum beats, heavy bass lines, and even the vocals generally hang
out down there. Which is odd, seeing as they have a female lead singer (who’s
pretty damn hot, but that’s just me), which sets up a certain gravity to the
songs. That said, it really makes the choruses and climaxes of the song pop
when the guitars and Emily’s voice reach those higher notes, and take what
would normally be a depressing song and bring it into the realm of happiness
(just like their singer does whenever I look at her). They also have a synth
(standard for indie rock) and a theremin
(standard for electrical engineering nerds), which they place in
relatively subtly, and adds a nice otherworldliness to their songs (especially
that theremin. Seriously, who knows how to play one? And thinks it’s a good
idea to put in a band?).
Anyway, if you would like to continue to stalk Emily Haines/listen to
some good music, they’ll have an album coming on in June. In the meantime,
listen to this dreamily calm song by them, then dive into the rest of Emily
Haines.
‘s collection, with special focus to my personal favorite album by
them, Fantasies.
