210 for our 210th: The Breakdown

As you might recall, the Frogs on a Log Blog crew recently decided to celebrate 210 posts by picking our top 210 albums. We broke it down evenly, each writer got to choose his favorite 42 albums (Steve only put 41). The only requirement was that there could be no duplicates (John and I got in a fight over who got Bitte Orca, I still have bruises). You can find the original list HERE.

I decided to take stats of the list and break it down to try to gain some perspective of the blog as a whole and its contributors. So I used the almighty Wikipedia to compile a list of release years, album lengths, and genres. I then broke down the information in way that I thought was interesting. I hope you find it interesting too. Sorry it took so long, I have been working on it since the list came out, but 210 albums is a lot!

A note on genres, they are inherently inaccurate. A genre never really accurately describes a type of music. Also, Wikipedia has some… interesting… opinions on what genres albums fall into (Eric is pissed that Kid Cudi is considered “hipster hop”). Also, when I finished the list of genres I found that the list represented 135 different genres. I decided to break down these genres into main groups using Wikipedia and the discretion of Mark, Eric, and I.

The first thing I did was split the combo genres like rock pop and add an album to both rock and pop. I then collapsed derivative genres like shoegaze into the main genre that Wikipedia claimed they derived from, in this case electronic. I then deleted any genres that had barely any albums and weren’t collapsible. Due to the method I used, wikipedia’s unreliableness, and the fact that albums could “double up” on a genre by being labeled rock and pop rock (2 points to rock), the data below should be taken with a grain of salt. It should be noted that any genre was considered Post-something was collapsed into the Post genre (since there were a good amount of them and they don't fit in with anything else. Some interesting genre finds were Halloween, Christian metal, blue-eyed soul, anti-folk, and the aforementioned hipster hop. Okay now onto the results.
