Tadpole Blog Week 2 (Sean Lennon

This week’s tadpole on a blog segment features a name you should be familiar with. Even though Sean has been making solo albums since the late nineties, I chose him this week because of his exciting new project “The Ghost Of a Saber-tooth Tiger” (or GOASTT for short) Sean’s new music is very original, which is especially impressive considering it is original from his father’s music. When your father is one of the most beloved musicians in the entire world, it can be sort of difficult to escape such a long shadow. Despite this shadow, Sean does a great job about finding his own voice. With the help of his French girlfriend Charlotte Kemp Muhl , GOAST is a blend of pop and avant-garde, with a mix of other genres   too including funk and psychedelic rock.

Playing guitar along with several other instruments, Sean crafts a sound that even John would think came from another planet.  Aside from the rest of the instrumentation, the guitar playing stands pretty well by itself. Sean’s playing really lends itself to the spacey sounding music. Lennon’s guitar sound is reminiscent of garage rock acts, but the rest of the band’s sound is so far departed from that scene which is probably for the best.  The only real complaint out of this group is that they have only put out four songs so far on cd.
