Well I was going to tell a joke here about dairy farmers, but I decided not too because it was too cheesy. So it’s the Tuesday after Columbus Day, and I sit down and I pick up my guitar. The first thing that I play is a wonderful song by Jimi Hendrix, “The Wind Cries Mary” This particularly sexy song by the “Cosmic Bluesman” himself is a wonderful tune to play when fall in the city is bringing you down. The most impressive thing about the song is its simplicity, The verses are only three barre chords, C A# and F. The compelling thing about the song though is the creative way that he plays those chords. Instead of just strumming, which most other guitarists today would, Jimi creatively arpaggiats those three chords and plays them on different parts of the neck to switch things up and make every verse sound special.
From the album Are You Experienced? The Wind Cries Mary is one of the most memorable tracks, standing tall among many other fan favorites. The track still receives radio airplay to this day. It sounds great on electric, but because im stuck here in my college dorm without my electric, im stuck with my acoustic. Even so, the song still sounds great. Whether it be on the machine it was meant for or on Grandpa’s old acoustic guitar, this track really withstands the test of time.
