Mark's Pick of the Week-Would things be Different by the Spring Standards

I’ve been a fan of this band for quite some time. I was lucky enough to catch them in New Jersey where they played a free show for XPN. The one adjective that jumps out at me when I think of this band is always creativity, both on stage and in the studio.

In the studio their song writing is phenomenal. Between the three of them their mastery of instruments means that they have no shortage of options for their sound. The trio’s tools include glockenspiel, trumpet, Wurlitzer, mandolin, and melodica along with the usual band staples. They also harmonize fantastically, and switch between lead and backing vocals to the point where their truly is no front man (or front woman.)

I also mentioned they showed creativity onstage. The band toured as a trio which, because of how complex some of these songs are three is kind of an inadequate number of performers, that is unless you’re the Spring Standards. These guys broke the drum parts up, so they each played a piece of the set along with their part (guitar, piano, trumpet, etc.) without compromising the quality of the songs.

This album has quite a few twists and turns with songs that deal with love, loss, fear, euphoria, and a few things in between. I still find myself listening to it a few years after we picked it up at the concert, and noticing the little nuances that make the album very different from a lot of stuff you hear. These nuances I think come from a truly creative group building off each other’s talents, and creating music they truly love.

Hopefully the Spring Standards decide to pay Philly a visit again soon, and look for their new EP(s) “Yellow” and “2” set to drop…quite frankly I’m not sure, but soon (hopefully).
