Its no secret that the prog rock greats had talent. Bands like Yes, Rush and King Crimson, had among their ranks some of the greatest and most technically skilled musicians to ever rock out. And when you think about the current status of modern prog, its no surprise that fewer and fewer musicians want to embrace a genre that at its core is about musicianship in a society where generally people more prefer catchy tunes to the heavily orchestrated, and the curious can get more than satisfied by the previously mentioned prog rock greats. Sure there have been a handful of prog bands like Dream Theatre (how good is John Petrucci?), mostly giving a heavier interpretation on progressive, but over the years the sound has sort of gotten stale, and really how could an up-and-comer ever hope to compete with Neil Peart or Steve Howe or Geddy Lee? That brings me to todays track of the moment, the wondrous and imaginative Yamantaka\\Sonic Titan, a Canadian prog band (ever hear one of those before?) that dresses up in black and white face paint (sound familiar?) and that only sometimes sings in English amid giant handmade set pieces that looked like they jumped off of the page of a manga (why am I using so many parentheses in this post?). Here is an excellent track from their first album YT\\ST entitled Hoshi Neko.
