Track of the Moment: Song 2 by Blur

Blur’s back ladies and gentlemen! One of the most successful Brit-pop acts of the 90’s took the stage Tuesday for the first time since 2009. Not only that, but Blur fans who have been sitting patiently by their computers waiting for some new material have finally been rewarded! Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon reveled a striped down (just piano and guitar) version of their new song “Under The West Way.” And earlier this month Coxon confired that Blur will in fact be coming out with a new album, after almost a decade of no new music!

I encourage anyone interested to look up the song to hear the version people recorded at the show, but I didn’t make it my pick since we don’t have a real studio recording. Instead I decided to pick one of my favorite numbers by Blur: Song 2.

The second track of the band’s self-titled is a bit of a departure from their usual stuff. It’s actually poking fun at the grunge bands in America that used quiet verses, nonsensical lyrics and loud riff driven choruses like Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, and Smashing Pumpkins. However, Blur even managed to excel in a genre they were making fun of, and the song got major airplay (as you all must know since the song is still very popular today.)

If this song doesn’t make you want to head bang then I don’t know what will! I like so many others eagerly await the new Blur release, and hope they come to Philly so we can all rock out like it’s the 90’s in the UK.
