Track of the Moment: Fairytale in the Supermarket by The Raincoats

The Raincoats were post-punk before it was uncool. Ana da Silva and Gina Birch formed the band in 1977 when they were art students in London. The lineup has changed up a bit over the years with those two as the only constants. This band kind of blew me away the first time I heard them, because I most certainly heard them before. Not literary, but in the bands they clearly influenced.

Both Kurt Cobain and Kim Gordon are very outspoken Raincoats fans, but I think several other bands including Pavement and The Neutral Milk Hotel as well as probably countless acts were also influenced by the duo.

This song was their first single, and has since been reissued as the opening track of their self-titled debut. They manage to mix acid and bases making a discordant post-punk sound with poppy elements creating an explosion of music. The whole album is really good post-punk (not that I would call myself an expert,) but if you like the newer stuff I can be pretty sure you can appreciate these guys too.
