Strangely hypnotic, subtly emotional, and daringly
different. These are all phrases that I would use to describe the ambient
electronic affair that is Oneohtrix Point Never’s most recent album Replica.
Sporting a strange yet intriguing album cover and even stranger and
intriguing-er music, Replica must have confused a lot of folks last year when
it was considered among one of 2011’s finest records, and rightfully so. But
that confusion is part of what makes Replica so good. It is an ambitious
ambient project that pushes the boundaries of sound and what sounds “good”,
lulling and luring listeners into a dream and then catching them off guard with
emotional twinges of sonic exploration. The album gets you to question just what is music, and what is good music. Is this even music? A good argument could be made that it is not at times. Decide for yourself. Picking out one song is a discredit to
the album, but that has never stopped me before. Here is a particularly
interesting track that stands pretty well by itself Sleep Dealer, though within the
context of the album is much more satisfying.
