Track of the Moment: Zoo Music Girl by the Birthday Party

It’s awesome being a post-punk fan now.  If I wanted the new release by the Contortionists in 1979, I would almost have to know the band to get it.  Now I can get their whole discography streaming on youtube in a matter of minutes.  So I read an article on The Birthday Party, and I want to hear them I don’t have to wait until they come to the US and drive to whatever venue they would be playing in I can just fire-up my internet machine!
What is one of the things I love about these guys, and others in their vain, is the variety of music.  They range from free jazz, punk, rockabilly, blues…basically everything.  The only kicker is it all is rapped in the same package.  Ambient feedback abounds, haunting lyrical delivery, and everything is abrasive, yep, just another Birthday Party song.
In this particular number we have a phenomenal free jazz track, with saxophone and all.  The whole track is a crescendo, with the repetitious chanting and all. The lyrics, though mostly nonsensical conjure vivid images.  As always Nick Cave is terrifying.  There is defiantly a rhythm to this song, but at the same time you almost can’t quite grab it, and that to me is one of the appeals.  It fills you with adrenalin like you could almost chase the song down, but you can’t, so just keep listening.
