Track of the Moment: Tie Your Mother Down by Queen

Tomorrow is Freddie Mercury’s Birthday, and a lot of people are celebrating.  Quite frankly I can’t blame them.  As an artist he was impeccable, as a songwriter he was extremely prolific, as a person he was so humble and admirable, and as a performer he was one of the best.  Queen has always been for me one of the few classic rock bands that I’m always in the mood to listen to.  To explain why you need only look at their discography.
Queen musically as a whole is also very unique in my opinion.  Steve and I have discussed this quite a few times.  Most bands have A sides (really great tracks that normally are really well known) and B sides (some good tracks, but mostly the stuff that hasn’t stood the test of time.  Queen seems to have A, B and C sides.  The A sides are the songs everyone (and I mean everyone) has heard, essentially the tracks off Greatest Hits, the best selling album in the UK.  The B-sides are songs off a few of their records that could have totally been singles (this track included) that for whatever reason aren’t really well known.  Then the C-sides which are the equivalent of normal B-sides.
That being said, if you are a Queen fan who doesn’t know their whole discography I would defiantly recommend, especially this time of year, you check out something new today.  Enclosed is the opening track of their phenomenal album “A Day at the Races.”  If you know it then you are aware of how it rocks in a way that only Queen can.  It’s got a great opening riff that persists throughout this song with lyrics from Freddie that flirt and charm you in a way that only he can.  Just by listening to this track you can see him strutting around the stage delivering just another performance of a lifetime.
