In an attempt to pay off the penalties I’ve obtained for stealing an impressive amount of equipment from the FoaLiaBMB offices I’ve agreed to write this week’s C/MITotW, as well as agreed to donate all the proceeds to charity. (You’re Welcome)
Do you like fun? Oh course you do! Now do you like the band Fun, the New York based indie pop band? That’s perhaps not as much of a resounding yes, but you definitely should! This trio is a well-polished pop band with a plethora of talent as well as instruments. A lot of their songs include a lot of horn, violin, and piano along with the usual musical instruments. Their front man Nate Ruess is a charismatic force with both his voice and stage presence. However, whenever I hear these guys I can’t help, but think I’ve heard this somewhere before.
In 1970 a band whose mission was “To pick up where the Beatles left off” was formed making modern pop songs with classical overtones. Through the creative force of Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood this band attained amazing success including holding the record for most Billboard Hot 100, Top 40 hits of any band. I’m speaking of course of The Electric Light Orchestra.
Both these bands have a very interesting spin on the pop sound, not satisfied with the sometimes really constrictive nature of mainstream pop sound, bringing in anything they can think of to bring out the best in the tracks. One of the most important factors in this equation can be the producer, something both of these bands have that category covered with Jeff Lynne in ELO’s corner, and Jeff Bhasker (who’s worked with such acts as Lana Del Rey and Kanye West among others) helping out fun. It might be a bit bold of me to claim, but I think Fun may in fact be “Picking up where ELO left off” but it’s still a little early to call…so I won’t claim that.
You can hear fun’s new album when it drops in the coming weeks, and see them on their US tour.
