Track of the Moment: The Fox, The Crow and The Cookie by mewithoutYou

My family are all Weezer fans, and a few years ago we went to see them in Atlantic city. The opening band was an artsy band that had an accordion and toy piano on stage as well as other instruments you wouldn’t expect to see on stage at a Weezer show. The performance was impassioned, interesting…and frankly not extremely well received by some of the audience. I was a bit confused why Weezer invited these guys to play because, despite how good they were, Weezer fans don’t really seem the type for this kind of music. Later, after bit of research, I discovered two things. One, Weezer, despite being a very commercial, well received rock band are into indie music themselves, and some members of mewithoutYou formed a Youtube Weezer cover band called “Sleezer” (which I feel might have contributed to Weezer inviting them to play.) However, by no means am I complaining. They put on a great show, no matter what anyone says.

mewithoutYou (which is how it’s stylized) is an art rock band from Philly. They are most notable for the themes of their lyrics, which draw from different religions images and teachings, as well as their experimental use of drums and guitar. Being an “experimental band” their music spans various styles, but share the same vivid lyrics delivered in vocalists, Aaron Weiss, spoken word demeanor.

Their newest album It's All Crazy! It's All False! It's All a Dream! It's Alright is a fantastic showcase of storytelling and paints some brilliant scenes packaged in really attention-grabbing music. The track of the moment “The Fox, The Crow and The Cookie” is the second track off the LP, and is an interesting take on a children’s story by Sufi mystic Bawa Muhaiyaddeen. I’m thankful to Weezer for bringing those guys to the stage that night, so I could experience a great band that I would have ordinarily missed.

Their new album Ten Stories is supposed to drop in May and you can check themoutHere: http://mewithoutyou.com/
