In terms of weird band names, Fuck Buttons has to be up there. They also have to be up there in terms of strange sounds as well. The band is first off an ambient electronic act, but to right them off as only that would be a serious miss step. If you had to add another genre into that mix it would undoubtedly be hardcore punk rock, which of course is strange, you wouldn’t think of those two genres going together, but give Sweet Love For Planet Earth a listen and you may just see what I mean. The band rarely uses vocals, but when they do they are screams, the kind of screams that Johnny Rotten would be proud of. That combined with the band’s name give the group an undeniably unique aesthetic. Of course the point of entry is a little high, the album only has six or so songs on it and they are all except for one over seven minutes long, with the longest being ten minutes. The vocals actually remind me a lot of Ministry, which if you didn’t know have some of the most abrasive vocals to date. Overall the band mashes beautiful and ugly, quaint and slimy. If you like acts like other ambient projects like Oneothrix Point Never or Black Dice you may enjoy Fuck Buttons but they certainly are not for everyone. Even so, listening to Street Horrrsing or their second album Tarot Sport can be rewarding.
