Will Oldham has written a lot of music over the years. From
his days as Palace Music, to his more permanent moniker Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billie,
the man has released enough music since the nineties to carve out for himself a
certain status that few other bands of today can say he has. While comparisons
between himself and other lo-fi songwriters of the nineties abound, particularly
to Smog, I consider Oldham to be a bit more like folk practitioner Loudon Wainwright
III, a man who has released so many albums over the years but has remained
remarkably sharp in terms of talent and consistency. The fact that Oldham has
extended his career this far along is testimony to his talent in his own right,
but sitting as the crowned jewel in his discography is the absolutely beautiful
I See A Darkness, and from that album the title track. Deeply personal, the
track uses simple imagery to deliver exactly what the title promises right to
the listener. It is today’s track of the moment.
