Broken Social Scene are by no means
new. They’ve put out 4 studio
albums since 2001, and have been featured in films like “Scott Pilgrim Verse
the World” and “The Time Traveler’s Wife” along with scoring a number of
movies. However, until a few days
ago I didn’t know they existed. On
a recommendation I picked up “You Forget It In People,” their sophomore record,
and have not put it down since.
Being a Indie-Baroque Pop, band with
up to 10 guys on stage, it’s safe to say these guys aren’t your average
Canadian act. They have a
phenomenal larger then life sound.
Not only that, but ever single piece is just as invaluable as it is
diverse. Each piece adds to the
overall sound like so many gears in a machine.
One of the best parts about these
guys is their sound is so full.
Pick any track from this album, and it has a very satisfying
completeness. The songs range from
lucid to hazy, sometimes even changing up during the song. With so much going on each listen kind
of brings something new to your attention.
Probably my favorite track on the
album is Almost Crimes (Radio Kills Remix.) From what I can tell that’s the
original song not a remix, but that’s neither here nor there. It plays more like an indie punk circa
1990. The song has a great whirly
wall of sound, as everything seems to be blasting from all directions at once. If fact I really do think this song
sounds like it’s taking place in the eye of a storm. The vocals in the chorus supercharge the track, and give it
a bit of guidance to the seemingly volatile track like someone shouting over
the wind.
Unfortunately, theses guys are on
an indefinite hiatus, and it seems like the individuals in the band have
decided to forgo this project in favor of individual endeavors. At least we still have these, and other
gems to enjoy while we wait for the day that maybe, just maybe these guys will
come back.
