When it comes to surf rock, Nathan Williams of Wavves knows
exactly what we want before we do. When the band was heralded as the next
greatest thing in Lo-fi after the two albums Wavves and Wavvves were released
within a year of each other, Williams zig-zagged our expectations and created the
well recorded piece of surf pop that nobody knew they wanted. Enter Sweet
Valley, Nathan’s new side project of producing electronic tracks with his
brother. Sweet Valley released an album and now a mixtape, a tape that takes
pretty well known tunes from video games and transforms them into dance
numbers. Is the mix great? eh. Is the mix exactly what we have subconsciously wanted
for years? Probably. Is the mix free? You bet your life it is. At its best
Eternal Champ (the name of the mix) takes a recognizable tune and turns it into
a dance number, at its worst it feels like it is trying to cash in on your
childhood obsession of The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, but not really,
because the mixtape is free. Nab it over at the bands Bandcamp, no consequences
