This has been my pick for quite a few weeks now. I had been meaning to pick up this
album for a while now, and after a bit of time to let it sink in I think it’s
about time I gave it a spot.
I
bet everyone I high school thought of some sappy love songs about your latest
crush. Even though I bet a lot of
you wish that you had the talent/follow-through/whatever you would need to
actually make these songs.
However, looking back at your high school self, there’s a chance you’re
content with not actually recording them.
Best Coast sounds like tracks in this vain BUT they are really good
despite or perhaps because of this.
I’m
not the first one to write about these guys. Their various EPs as well as their two releases have been on
various “Best of lists” since they first hit the scene. The band consists of vocalist, and primary
songwriter Bethany Cosentino and musical partner Bobb Bruno.
All
the songs revolve around loosing your love, the summer, being lazy, cats and
weed. The simplicity of the songs makes
them seem really sincere. The fact
that you could have written the lyrics makes it seems like they have all the
more meaning, a real heart on your sleeve kind of feel.
These
lyrics are rapped up in a soft, chewy surf rock package. The low-fi buzz of the guitar, and the
simple drums is all the makings of a great garage rock band. The hooks in this album are great to,
which is something that I put a lot of emphasis on for Each one of these could easily be
a single.
I’m
ending this post with single "Our Deal.” The music video was directed by Drew Barrymore, and features
Donald Glover, Shailene Woodley and Alia Shawkat among others. You can check out their blog, website, and new album!
