Some songs tell really good stories. They don’t always have to be long, or
even very complex. What’s
important is the imagery and sincerity.
This song tells the story of a young boy watching his father with his
car, the aforementioned Silver Thunderbird. In the few lines the song has he paints the picture of how
he remembered his father getting up for work, and driving his car. There’s a bit of description and
dialogue, but that’s about it. It
still manages to capture me ever time I hear it.
The nostalgia, vivid description,
and delivery make me believe that this song is Cohn’s true observations of how
his Dad loved his car. The lines
“Down the road in the rain and snow/The man and his machine would go” conjures
up the image of the T-Birds in their prime, and the Americans who built and
drove them. If Detroit needs
something to revitalize and inspire them look no further then this track.
