Blogging has its perks. I get to work close with good friends who show me new music
all the time, I get to bother people frequently by asking them if they ever
heard of a certain band, and I get advanced copies of music to review. Obviously this article is about the
third one.
Kemp
and Eden are an intriguing duo consisting of Kemp Muhl (of GOASTT) and Eden
Rice. They were childhood friends
who grew up in Atlanta Georgia.
The story goes that at a young age the duo wrote songs together before
life took them their separate ways.
After a number of years apart they have reunited, more worldly and
experienced, to record the songs from their childhood. That story itself is worthy of its own
feel-good movie, and they can already use this as the soundtrack.
The
songs themselves manage to be very childlike while still maintaining the
perspective of an adult. Like
really good children books they manage to have both sophistication in their
structure and language, whiles still maintaining whimsy and nostalgia in the
song’s feeling. Both these lovely ladies
harmonize so well that they must have known each other since they were
children.
It almost sounds like they recorded
the songs outside with just a guitar.
For the most part the songs are mainly guitar driven with sparse
instruments that sound almost as if they were coming from somewhere in the
background. Some tracks feature
more instruments, but they are never to commanding to take your attention away
from the singing.
Overall I really enjoyed this record. Unfortunately, since the album, “Black
Hole Lace,” doesn’t come out until August 28 I don’t have a studio single to
post up, BUT instead I have a great rendition of the title track they released
a few weeks ago. If you like what you
hear be sure to follow their tumbler and facebook where you can find news, and
other videos. Listen, Enjoy, and
Get ready for the new album! I know I really enjoy it.
