If you were to try and describe the Dirty Projectors, you would fail for two reasons. The first reason is that there are no words to describe the Dirty Projectors. The second reason is that even if you could find the words, many of which would have to be invented, no one would believe you. In fact that appears to be just what the lead singer is trying to do on the albums cover (above), and he seems to be having those same troubles. Swing Lo Magellan, the follow up to 2009’s immaculate Bitte Orca must have been one of the hardest albums to make of all time. When a band makes an album that is as consistent and as well received as Bitte Orca was, creating something that will simultaneously feed your creative appetite and the mouths of needy fans can be something exceedingly difficult to do. Dirty Projectors have done it though, and done it, passing the perverbial “second record test” (though they did release several albums before Bitte Orca) with flying colors. Featuring much more varied production and stronger lyrics, Swing Lo Magellan may not have some of the same shock value that Bitte Orca did, but it certainly takes a few right (hairpin) turns that will keep fans more than held over till their next album (which I assume will be released in 2015). Here is the title track, Swing Lo Magellan
