Mark’s Pick of the Week: The Backlines by Star

It seems like if I’m ever in the mood for indie pop then Canada has just what I’m looking for.  Bands like the New Pornographers (and all the side projects the guys from the New Pornographers do), Islands, The Unicorns, and Broken Social Scene are all great examples of the great indie pop our neighbors to the north have to offer.  I’m sure there are plenty of others out their waiting to be discovered and in my attempt to “catch em’ all” I’m looking at yet another band in this category: Stars.
If I had to give you the cliff notes for these guys I would have to say a slightly more baroque Metric.  Their lead singer Amy Millian vocals certainly makes me think of Emily Haines of Metric.  The rest of the sound is more pop then the “kind-of-shoegazy” sound those guys put out.  Whatever you want to call it I dig this album.
Though I’m not extremly familiar with this band (this is their 6th studio album along with their 5 EPs) the album is pretty solid and has a really upbeat sunny feel to it with perhaps a few more synths then this track lets on.  You can hear the whole thing on their Soundcloud, and if you like what you hear check out their website for show dates and other albums.
